best comparison of Colombian emeralds vs. emeralds from Zambia and Brazil

Much has been speculated on where the best emeralds in the world are produced. The arguments are ongoing, but the experts always make their comparisons between Colombian emeralds versus the emeralds of Zambia and Brazil.

This precious stone, with its intense and deep green colour, holds the title of the most beautiful gem in the world. It is found all over the planet, however regions in Africa and America occupy the top five positions on the list of the largest producers of engagement rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings with high-quality emeralds.

colombian emeralds

Origin of the stone of love and knowledge.

For decades, Zambia for the African continent, and Colombia and Brazil for America, have owned the podium. There are different arguments regarding the quality, cut types and colour of their gems.
The first contender, Zambia, exports between 12% and 18% of the emeralds to the international market, leaving in the hands of lovers of these precious stones, gems that are lighter and more translucent than those provided by Brazil or Colombia. Experts agree that Zambian emeralds show fewer inclusions known as ‘garden’, and that carvings or cuts are very good quality in Africa.

The second contender, Brazil, commercialises around 15% to 20% of its emeralds to the world. The emeralds produced in this territory are more like the Colombian emeralds; their green colour is a little darker and the sizes on average are considerably larger than the gems found in Zambia. The final contender is Colombia, a magical land that not only brings great mysticism to the origin story of this dazzling gem, but also has in its record, the fact that it has brought more than 60% of the emeralds to the global market. In terms of quality, Colombia takes first place, with Colombian emeralds having the least garden or inclusions, and therefore it requires the least oil baths or hydration.
Regarding beauty, the Colombian emerald is the darkest and deepest green; it has more than 40 different shades of green. Colombia is the only country that produces bluish-coloured emeralds as well as the only country in the world that produces the ‘cat’s eye’ emerald. In the top ten of the most valuable emeralds in the world, seven of them are Colombian from the Muzo and Gachalá regions.

According to a statement from the National Federation of Colombian Emeralds (Fedesmeraldas in Spanish), commercial alliances with countries such as China and India placed the Colombian emerald above its main competitors (Brazil and Zambia).
This means that Colombia occupies first place with exports over 142 million dollars during 2019–2020. Hopefully, and with the rebound in mining activity in Muzo Boyacá, Colombia wins the quality battle against Brazil and Zambia; and Colonial Gemstones brings you the best emeralds in the world, directly from the mines to your hands!
